The countdown to our annual Global Conference has begun! From October 13-15, more than 400 members and friends of the Teach For All network will convene in Puebla, Mexico for the 2014 Teach For All Global Conference. Together, network CEOs and staff, supporters, board members, and other allies from over 35 countries will join renowned education thought leaders in an exploration of the theme “Leadership for Change.”
Hosted by a different network partner each year, the Global Conference offers the Teach For All community the opportunity to consider issues critical to ensuring educational opportunity and excellence for all students. The 2013 Global Conference took place in the rural province of Yunnan, China, and previous conferences were held in Santiago, Mumbai, London, and Berlin.
Inspired by host Enseña por Mexico's local educational context, our community will engage in discussions about how to identify, define, and foster the transformational leadership necessary to take on the complex challenges facing students around the world. Each day, through keynote presentations, small group discussions, community experiences, and break-out sessions, we’ll delve into questions fundamental to our theme of “Leadership For Change”:
- What does it take to lead ambitious change across the system?
- What does it take for classrooms to accelerate leadership??
- How do we foster leadership to drive the change necessary for all children to attain an excellent education?
A series of Changemaker Conversations in which renowned educators, policy makers, media influencers, and philanthropists discuss their leadership journeys will provoke our thinking about these questions. Featured Changemakers include Founder and Director of Fundación Escuela Nueva Vicky Colbert and Fortune Magazine Senior Editor, Pattie Sellers; Governor Sergio Fajardo of Antioquia, Colombia and Enseña por Colombia CEO Pablo Jaramillo; DC Public Schools Chancellor Kaya Henderson and Commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Education Kevin Huffman; and philanthropist Julian Robertson and US Business Editor and New York Bureau Chief at The Economist, Matthew Bishop.
Our exploration of leadership will take us beyond the four walls of the conference room and into the neighborhoods and schools in which Enseña por Mexico works. There, we will consider what it means for educators to have a vision for their students that is informed by parents, community members, and the students themselves. We will hear from Professor Fernando Reimers on empowering our students to be drivers of change, and from Latin American policy makers—including Juan Manuel Urtubey, Governor of Salta, Argentina and Jorge Cruz Bermudez, Secretary of Education, Puebla, Mexico—in discussion with World Bank Lead Education Economist for Latin America and the Carribbean, Barbara Bruns, about what it takes to lead ambitious change across a system.
As we gather together each year, united by a common mission to expand educational opportunity for all children, the Global Conference reminds us of our diverse network's enormous potential to effect change. This year, in celebration of innovation and the power of sharing solutions, Teach For All is excited to launch our inaugural Innovation Breakthrough Expo, where participants, alumni, and other members of our network will share their pioneering work in the education sector.
We will be posting and sharing highlights throughout the 2014 Teach For All Global Conference. To stay connected to the events in Puebla, follow Teach For All on Twitter and Facebook and subscribe to our newsletter. #TFALLGC2014
