Jay is a former secondary school teacher and an Ambassador (alumnus) of Teach First who has worked in middle leadership roles in two schools serving lower-income communities. He joined Teach First NZ: Ako Mātātupu as Director of Strategy and Operations in 2014 after a number of years working with Teach First in London. At Teach First, Jay initially worked in the Office of the CEO, helping to develop Teach First's 2022 strategy and Fair Education Impact Goals. As part of these efforts, Jay lead on Teach First's 10th Anniversary event series, culminating in "Challenge 2012." He went on to lead Teach First's Network Management team, where he oversaw the development of Teach First's alumni network.
Jay has founded two charities focused on reducing inequality in education in England and New Zealand, and has an MSc in the Economics of Education from the Institute of Education at University College London. In 2013, with his MSc supervisor, Jay published a working paper quantitatively evaluating the impact of Teach First on the outcomes for young people in London.
