Ambassadors of Empathy

Michael Mahoney, Director of Therapeutic Programming, Sci Academy New Orleans, Teach For America 2010

Special Education teacher Michael Mahoney wants his students to have a sense of unlimited possibility for what they can be and what they can contribute to the world.

“What I care most deeply about is cultivating young people to be empowered, happy and have a holistic vision for their lives that goes beyond specific academic goals. I want them to have a sense of unlimited possibility for what they can be and a sense of critical self-reflectiveness about what they care about and what they want to contribute to the world. I want them to be people who are proud of who they are and have a sense of dignity and worth.

As educators, It's not just a matter of trying to accommodate them into our classes; it’s a matter of understanding how they bring something incredible and special to the table that nobody else can bring.”
