On April 18, Teach For All’s CEO and Co-founder, Wendy Kopp, participated in an event hosted by the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C. to share insights on the global network’s efforts to scale quality education in communities around the world. The event marked the release of Millions Learning: Scaling Up Quality Education in Developing Countries, a new report by Brookings’ Center for Universal Education. The report, which features Teach For All’s approach to developing local leadership, examines diverse cities and countries that have effected change by improving their education systems, and the factors that contributed to their progress.
Wendy joined a panel discussion moderated by Julia Gillard, former Prime Minister of Australia and Chair of the Global Partnership for Education, alongside Madhav Chavan, co-founder and CEO of Pratham, Esvah Chizambe of the Ministry of General Education in Zambia, and Jenny Perlman Robinson, a Brookings Fellow and co-author of the Millions Learning report. During the panel, Wendy emphasized that one of Teach For All’s central learnings from observing communities that are making the fastest progress is that they are locally rooted and globally informed. She underlined that it’s crucial for leadership development to be fostered at levels of the education system as well as outside of it, with local leaders on a shared mission to improve outcomes for children, while at the same time that communities around the world facing similar challenges must communicate with each other and share innovative solutions that can be applied in other contexts.
In her remarks, Wendy noted that Teach For All network partner alumni, working alongside many others, are taking on this challenge. She highlighted the work of Teach for India alumni in Pune, India, where local leaders are spearheading multiple efforts to support teachers, including partnering with veteran educators to provide feedback and support and ensuring new teachers have the tools they need to help their students make significant progress.
