We’re excited to begin the new year by welcoming our newest network partner, Teach For Niger, to Teach For All. Teach For Niger is a non-governmental, non-profit organization whose vision is “One day every Nigerien child will have access to quality education regardless of their location, gender, social origin, and religion.” Through attracting, mobilizing, and investing in future leaders, Teach For Niger is committed to shaping a future of equity and educational excellence in Niger.
With a national literacy rate of 30%, Niger’s education system faces multiple challenges that impede previous progress. Universal primary education and completion are hindered by high population growth, low enrollment, and high dropout rates. Access and completion are particularly low for the most vulnerable children, including girls in rural areas and children with disabilities. Intersecting crises related to climate change and extremism, and a shortage of teachers are additional challenges that often demotivate families and communities.
Teach For Niger exists to provide solutions to these challenges and to ensure that one day, all children in Niger have access to an excellent education, including those in the most marginalized areas. The organization recruits and develops promising young Nigerien leaders to serve as full-time teachers (fellows) in schools in underserved regions, and will continue to provide fellows with in-depth training throughout their two-year teaching commitment, supporting them to both foster their students’ academic mastery and equip them with life skills. Through teaching, fellows will gain leadership experience as well as a deep understanding of and commitment to helping solve Niger's educational challenges. As alumni, they will continue to be agents of change, contributing to the creation of an education system that prepares every Nigerien child for a successful future.
Teach For Niger’s CEO Nouredine Abdoulaye hails from Tahoua in Niger’s central region and is a passionate advocate for reforming the country’s education system. A graduate of Academic City College in Accra, Ghana, Nouredine began his career as an HR Officer at R&J Group. While in university, he volunteered in under-resourced communities in Zinder, teaching English and entrepreneurship. This experience deepened his understanding of social and educational inequities and fueled his commitment to education as a tool to combat poverty and insecurity. As a member of the Education Cluster’s Retrained Task Force (RDS) of Niger, Nouredine has played a vital role in addressing educational challenges during crises to ensure access to learning opportunities for vulnerable populations.
The first cohort of 30 Teach For Niger fellows will be placed in the Zinder region, where they will teach a range of subjects—including mathematics, science, physics, English, French, and history—to students aged 7 to 18 years. We look forward to learning from and sharing more about Teach For Niger’s progress in the months and years to come.
